With more than thirty-five years as a sole practitioner, Mark J. Rose has seen it all. After graduating from Northwestern University School of Law, and a few years with a firm, Rose set out on his own and never looked back. Over time, Rose built a successful business litigation practice, appearing in state and federal courts across the Midwest, in New York and Texas. What are Rose’s top pointers for developing a successful solo practice? They are (1) become an effective legal writer – this perhaps is your most important skill; (2) be thorough when taking discovery, your case depends on the results; (3) find a good assistant and learn to delegate; and (4) always consult regularly with your clients. Lastly, although sole practice requires long hours, keep a balance between work and home. You are in this for the long haul.
